Get Ready for the Ride of Your Life Michael Friedson!

(I definitely wouldn’t trade places with you!)

Time Out New York promoted from within and introduced their new Editor-in-Chief Michael Friedson.  According to Mediaweek, Friedson replaces Brian Farnham who is leaving to join an unspecified Internet start-up.  (Above is Farnham’s last cover.)

How can TONY improve their covers?  That’s a big question and we’ll be watching Michael’s choices over the next few weeks.  In the meantime, here is some free advice, even though he didn’t ask for it!  After the jump.

Check out the celebrity weeklies – They do a great job on packing multiple, visual stories on their covers.  Why not try that with TONY instead of focusing on ONE story visually?

Take a Page from Page Six Magazine - Page Six Magazine is building a niche in NY by building up local socialites and celebrities on their covers.  That would work well for TONY — especially if you try the visual inset approach!

Always Ask Yourself “Who is the TONY Reader?” — Get in the reader’s head and see if they would want to grab the copy of TONY off the newsstand.  During the month of January, TONY produced four issues about fixing yourself for the new year – is that really what your reader wants?
