Earlier this week I attended the IAB (Interactive Advertising Bureau) Conference in Phoenix Arizona and became familiar with a site called BabyCenter.com.

Tina Sharkey, Global President and Chairman, BabyCenter, LLC. spoke at the conference about her very successful site, which has been connecting with expecting parents and parents for years.

The site also features online destinations in Australia, Austria, Canada, China, Germany, India, Latin America, Sweden, Switzerland and the UK.

The site is owned by Johnson & Johnson. Sharkey explained at the conference that the site has complete editorial separation from J&J. For example, when the site signs a non-disclosure agreement with a J&J competitor regarding exclusive news, BabyCenter will keep that information confidential from J&J.

What’s interesting to me is that J&J is obviously not a traditional place to look for a job in media. Many times when you’re searching for work, you may be simply looking at the big traditional media companies. But BabyCenter is the perfect example of why you should expand your job search.

Companies like J&J are investing in sites like BabyCenter because it helps them to directly connect with their consumers and build relationships that can potentially last a lifetime.

You can expect this trend to continue. You will see many consumer brands building media outlets that need talented journalists that can work in the digital space.

So if you were feeling lost in your job search, maybe this will give you some new direction. If you weren’t looking for a job, I can’t stress the importance of getting “digital” experience under you belt.

It’s where the money is and will continue to be!
