US WEEKLY’S JANICE MIN DEBUTS ANOTHER OLD COVER

Pasetsky’s Cover Critique

Is Janice Min losing her touch?

Why you ask?

After last week’s Heidi “I’m ready to wed” cover, I started to think this was the case.

With this week’s cover…

Now I am convinced.

This story is OLD and WHO CARES about Jessica and Tony?

The only good news here is for the team at In Touch - which at $1 less than Us - should beat Us Weekly on the newsstand this week with its version of this story.

Moving to the insets.

Angie confesses, “I never though I’d fall for Brad.” I know it’s a new quote, but WOW this feels like such an old story.

Us offers up Sex and the City’s new secrets. What a weird inset? What could those secrets be?

BREAKING NEWS: WE HAVE RECEIVED AN EMAIL THAT’S SORTA REAL OR AS JANICE WOULD SAY “FAUX.” IT’S A DISCUSSION ABOUT BETWEEN JANICE MIN AND AN UNDISCLOSED SUBORDINATE.

THIS PART IS FAUX

Min: Who the hell set me up for that interview with ABC? I was totally caught off guard.

Subordinate: You were great. You looked great. I mean. What’s wrong?

Min: Look at the transcript!

THIS IS THE REAL PART (YES, I CAN TELL THE DIFFERENCE JANICE! HA!)

ABC: Those dangerous scenarios [celebrities photographed by the paparazzi with their children] have led magazines like Us Weekly to set some basic standards for they types of pictures they’ll use.

MIN: “We don’t show children photographed at schools…If a celebrity seems like he or she is under duress when the photo is being taken, we won’t run it.”

ABC: But how will the magazine’s editors know whether or not the person was being harassed or hassled?

MIN: “If a judgment call has to be made, that’s when we go to the representatives for the celebrity…And for celebrities who have contacted us and asked us not to run their kids, we don’t run the photos.”

ABC: But Us Weekly recently featured a photo of actress Reese Witherspoon on vacation with her children, and actor Jake Gyllenhaal. Witherspoon and her children appear to be shielding their faces.

MIN: “Reese Witherspoon, Jake Gyllenhaal have a relationship that our readers are really interested in. The fact that they went away on a family vacation all together is definitely of interest to the audience…My feeling on that is, there are many photographs of Reese Witherspoon and her children we do not run. I mean that one, I would definitely say is right on the line.”

THIS PART IS FAUX

Subordinate: I see what you’re saying. But at least you closed off with a strong quote.

THIS PART IS REAL.

MIN: “Children have played a great part in enhancing the connection between celebrities and their fans…I think any parent who’s entered into celebrity would have to consider that when they have children these days, that paparazzi will be part of your life, will be part of your children’s lives.”

THIS PART IS MY OPINION

Oh REALLY! I guess Us Weekly doesn’t really have a policy after all.
