Our thoughts are with his family.

Russert, of Buffalo, N.Y., took the helm of the Sunday news show in December 1991 and turned it into the most widely watched program of its type in the nation. His signature trait there was an unrelenting style of questioning.

A great man and a great loss for this country

How entirely sad. He was a wonderful man - a good father and son. So close to Father’s Day too. It reminds me of the sadness I felt when David Bloom died in Iraq. I will miss his presence and kind face on the news.

Mr. Russert’s election reports will likely be among his most remembered contributions. Their reliability and accuracy scooped those of every other network reporter. His rumpled appearance and demeanor made him appear to be a soft touch guy, but he was a ruthless, probing reporter who left presidents and bank clerks trembling. “Meet The Press” will never be the same.

I’m astounded, and profoundly sad. Mr. Russert’s ability to create objectivity in a very subjective political arena was inspiring, informative, and intellectually stimulating.

My heart goes out to his family, and to all of us as well. Whatever wil we do now on Sunday mornings?
