LIFE & STYLE WEEKLY MAGAZINE REVEALS BRITNEY SPEARS’ SUICIDE DRAMA
It’s tough being an editor of a celebrity weekly.
There’s a lot of pressure to deliver sales - especially in this marketplace.
Gas prices are soaring and consumers are less likely to spend money on things like celebrity weekly magazines.
And we’ll see that when ABC releases the numbers for the first half of 2008.
BTW - have you noticed that the celeb weeklies kinda forgot about the whole rapid reporting thing?
Anyhow - this cover of Life & Style disturbs me. Why?
(Full-disclosure - I developed a similar cover at one point)
Today, I believe suicide is a topic that crosses the line.
Suicide is awful.
And it shouldn’t be on the cover of a celeb magazine where readers want to escape into the lives of celebrities.
I don’t want to read how Britney tried to kill herself twice.
Even if it’s true.
And let’s assume for a moment that it is true. Can you imagine how Britney will feel when she sees this cover. It certainly won’t help her.
But let me get back to where I started.
I truly believe that the pressure drives this type of decision and there needs to be a rationale discussion in the industry about the topics that are appropriate.
Suicide is not one of them.
