In the upcoming drama Milk, due out in December, Sean and James share a kiss.

James talked to September’s GQ about filming the kiss, saying, “It wasn’t twelve hours, but it certainly felt like it.”

A crane was used for the shot, continues James, “but it starts close and then it takes maybe a minute. That’s a long time on film with everybody watching and, like, a fake mustache getting in your mouth…long enough that you couldn’t help thinking, ‘Oh, my God, I’m kissing Spicoli.’”

Penn’s character is Harvey Milk, the country’s first openly gay elected official, who was later assassinated in 1978. Franco plays Scott Smith, one of his boyfriends.
