David Granger Unveils Esquirer’s Electronic Paper Issue: Marks Magazine’s Historic 75th Anniversary

CoverAwards’ attended the much anticipated release of Esquire’s 75th anniversary issue, which features special electronic ink.

It’s hard to tell by the above image - but the box above the 75th issue is flashing. Check out this youtube image to see the image in action.

According to Esquire, the battery life was supposed to last up to 90 days originally - but will now last up to eight months.

When the battery dies, a permanent image will apparently appear.  I’ll have to wait and see.

Cover price for this special issue is $5.99 up from the normal $3.99 issue.

The big theme for this issue is that the 21st century starts now.

David Granger told CoverAwards that this “starts now” theme reflects the issues that are happening in society, from the election to the feeling that somethings about to happen.

When will Esquire do this again?

Looks like Q1 2009 - and Esquire has the exclusive on this technology until then.

CoverAwards asked Granger about the dark black cover - and Granger stated that it was the best color to contrast with the electronic paper.  It also represents the significance of the issue.

During the press conference, Granger indicated that other Hearst titles will be using the special technology - but would not clarify which ones are ready to take the leap.

If you’re looking for a special issue, you better hurry.

Only 100,000 copies have been printed and will be made available in Barnes & Nobles, Borders and select newsstands.  Subscribers WILL NOT receive the special e-ink copy.

Esquire partnered with Ford, which features the first ever electronic ad inside the cover.
