New Atom Smasher Machine Could Prove God Particle
A $9 billion atom-smasher, called the large hadron collider, has been built to recreate conditions not seen since a split second after the Big Bang 14 billion years ago. The machine will be turned on tomorrow and is meant to help scientists search for an elusive subatomic particle, dubbed the “God particle.”
“At last we can test some of our ideas about what we are made of. It will help answer some big and deep questions,” says Kevin Varvell, a physicist from the University of Sydney.
Once the machine is turned on, it could produce man-made mini black holes, revealing that the universe has extra dimensions that are normally curled up, reports the Sydney Morning Herald.
