Us Weekly Features Anna Nicole's Baby's Second Birthday: No Sarah Palin This Week

Us Weekly went from a cover everybody was talking about with its controversial Sarah Palin cover to a cover topic that nobody is talking about!

But first, the positive.  Baby covers do sell well.

Unfortunately for Us Weekly, that’s where the positive news ends.

Danielynn, while adorable, is completely unrecognizable.  And, she’s the first thing you see on the newsstand.

Why does this matter?

Many newsstand buyers make quick decisions based on how recognizable the cover topic is and this one fails the test.

Also, it’s worth noting that Larry Birkhead was made a small inset.  The magazine gets that the reader probably isn’t loving Larry Birkhead that much.  If the reader was still interested in him, that inset would have been the full cover.

On another note, I’m disappointed that Us did not include Sarah Palin on its cover at all this week.  The magazine appears to have caved in from the enormous media pressure from last week.  It would have made sense for the magazine to at least have an inset following-up the story.

Bottom line: Not a good week for Us especially with the rest of the category delivering very strong covers.
