So, what’s the story behind the black and white NYC cover photo?

This is the same photo that appeared on the debut issue of New York, dated April 8, 1968.  The only difference, according to the magazine, is that on this 40th anniversary issue the Manhattan skyline is rendered in metallic silver, rather than in four colors.
