People Magazine: Jennifer Hudson's Agony

I just shared with you Us Weekly’s cover and now here’s People Magazine’s Jennifer Hudson cover.

As I mentioned on Monday, I expected People to be the magazine to feature this story – and Larry Hackett delivers a very solid cover.

It edges Us Weekly in a few specific areas – but that’s critical on the newsstand.

  • Instead of using separate insets of Jennifer Hudson’s family members like Us, People insets a photo featuring Jen with her deceased mom and nephew.
  • The main photo of Jen on People is captivating.  She looks stunned, vacant and you’re getting direct eye contact.  The photo on Us’ cover is strong but she looks too sultry for this type of story.

In addition, People Magazine features exclusive photos of Angie’s overseas trip.  It’s always a plus to have exclusive pics.

The one thing I could do without on People’s cover is Tara Reid. Does anybody care about what she’s up to at this point? I’ve heard her plastic surgery nightmare so many times.

Bottom Line: Look for above average sales for People this week – would have been 1.7 million on the newsstand without Us, but definitely above 1.5 million.
