OK Magazine Gets On The Obama Train with a Focus on Michelle

According to MSNBC, OK! magazine has been in quite a slump lately with last week’s issue featuring Suri Cruise allegedy selling under 300,000 copies on the newsstand.
UPDATE: However, OK! disputes that number and says it was significantly higher.
Ouch!
MSNBC also reported that sales have been on a steady decline since Kent Brownridge joined the OK! team, but OK Magazine refuted that claim as well.
Double Ouch!
Could this cover featuring the Obamas be the turnaround issue for OK! Magazine?
On a positive note, OK! focused on Michelle Obama.
This was a smart move and will give it half a chance on the newsstand.
Her style, her date nights with Barack, and her friends are all interesting details.
And it was a smart photo choice by OK! NOT to use the photo from Election night (the one where Michelle was wearing that strange red and black dress.) That photo would’ve made this cover feel dated.
But, now for the bad news….
This issue is up against People magazine, which has shown itself to be the dominant player in the celebrity weekly category especially during this rough economic period.
It appears that consumers are turning to People magazine as their celebrity weekly of choice. If you’re at the newsstand, why would you buy OK! over People when they are both featuring the same type of cover???
Plus, this is a very ’soft’ cover. There’s no drama.
And, let’s keep it real. Only People magazine can get away with this type of sell.
Bottom line: OK is still not OK. But Obamamania could help the mags’ sales increase over recently reported sales figures.
