Are Magazine Editors Going to the Obama Well One Too Many Times?

The Obamas are all the rage right now but it’s starting to look like editors are treating the Obamas like Brangelina.
Magazine editors are tapping into the Obamas for their covers to the point of over-saturating the market.
Newsweek just released its special issue featuring the Obama family (above), an 84-page issue, which is carrying a hefty $7.95 cover price and remain on sale until February, 2009.
“We wanted to do a standalone issue that celebrates this historic moment in American history and the American presidency,” said Newsweek editor Jon Meacham tells Folio, who calls the issue “a keepsake.”
This special issue is not unique in its premise.
So far we’ve seen People Magazine feature a solo Barack cover and a Barack Obama family cover. Us Weekly features Barack as a dad while OK! Magazine focuses on Michelle Obama’s world. Globe introduced a bit of scandal with its MIchelle Obama vs. Oprah feud cover. And, don’t forget about Time or other special issues already on newstands.
Time will tell if the Obamas will deliver newsstand magic.
But, so far, so good.
According to the New York Post, People’s recent issue featuring Barack Obama solo sold close to 2.2 million copies on the newsstand and Us Weekly Barack/Michelle cover crossed the 1 million mark — confirming CoverAwards’ earlier report.
But it’s really up to the editors to brainstorm creative cover lines, photos and angles that will keep this historical story fresh.
Don’t be surprised if you see the Obama girls make their full cover debut on one of the celebrity weeklies next week. I’ll talk more about that on Monday.
Stay tuned!
