Travolta Tragedy to Spur Multiple Celebrity Weekly Covers

This horrible story for John Travolta will result in multiple celebrity weeklies/tabloids covering it from different angles.

And, as a celebrity weekly editor, the big decision will be the angle of the story – especially if you are going for a full cover.

This week I’m going to provide three predictions on this tragic story and go as far to tell you who I believe will use each angle:

People: Inside the Travolta’s Family Tragedy (Larry Hackett’s People Magazine will use a simple authoritative line like this one and will be the first choice among consumers at the newsstand if this cover is done correctly.)

US Weekly: Janice Min and company will go for the Kelly Preston angle, e.g. Inside a Mother’s Tragic Loss.  This angle can differentiate Us enough from People that it to could have a strong sale on the newsstand.

National Enquirer: Look for David Perel and the National Enquirer to go for the Scientologly angle as well as the alleged gay boyfriend of John Travolta angle.  It’ll be down and dirty!

The rest of the category will have a major inset on their covers but I don’t expect more than 3 covers on this story.
