You’ll be hearing groans from both Life & Style and Star Magazine this morning with this Rihanna cover from People hitting newsstands.
While Star has the stronger cover, People will win on its history of credibility.
And, in these tough economic times, readers at the newsstand will choose one – not two Rihanna covers.
Their choice will be People.
Besides credibility, here’s why this cover works:
What a photo!
It’s by far the most dramatic photo of Rihanna – even better than Star Magazine’s cover photo.
The layout of the cover is haunting – especially with the black frame around the picture.
While the main headline “Rihanna’s Nightmare” is simple, it definitely works.
People adds one new detail in the dek that I haven’t heard, which is the hotel-room trashing. However, it doesn’t appear like they have that much new in terms of reporting.
But, like I said earlier, when you’re People Magazine you’ve got the consumer’s belief that you will be the credible source for news and will offer the reader an in-depth story that EVERYBODY is talking about.
Bottom Line: People wins the Rihanna cover battle on the newsstand despite a very strong effort from Star Magazine.
