Susan Boyle is Not a U.S. Cover Star According to Top Editor in Chiefs!

A CoverAwards’ Exclusive

The celebrity weeklies rolled out their new issues yesterday – and CoverAwards found it surprising that not one of the magazines went for a full cover featuring Susan Boyle.

Susan Boyle is a huge Internet sensation. Her online video has been watched by more people than those who watched Barack Obama’s Inauguration speech!

Here’s Why Susan Didn’t Get the Full-Cover Treatment!

CoverAwards asked the editor in chiefs of the major celebrity weeklies as well as industry insiders why Susan – despite her online popularity – failed to receive a full cover.

Richard Spencer, EIC of In Touch, explained that there are three reasons that Boyle did not get the nod for a full-cover.

“There are not a lot of great photos of her. The show is not broadcast on American television (you have to watch it online.)  Plus, as awesome as her song was, in a magazine you can’t be moved by her voice — you can only read about it – so it isn’t as dramatic as hearing her,” explained Spencer.

An industry insider supported Spencer’s point: “Being successful as a star on the Internet is totally different from holding the cover of a magazine. To click on a link on the Internet doesn’t involve any financial transaction whereas the reader has to put their hand in their pocket to buy a magazine so the criteria of who should hold a cover of a magazine is totally different.”

CoverAwards asked Tony Frost, editor in chief of Globe Magazine, what he thought about Susan Boyle’s cover potential.  Frost emphatically said, “NO – not unless she’s caught in bed with Simon Cowell or Piers Morgan…or both of them!”

Candace Trunzo, editor in chief of Star Magazine, added, “She’s a delightful character with an amazing voice, but not enough Star power for a main image—at least not yet!”

Katie Caperton, OK! Magazine’s EIC, said, “While this was an amazing story, Susan Boyle was EVERYWHERE last week: CNN, Today Show, GMA, Larry King, and so on. Weekly magazine editors had to decide whether her story had reached its saturation point, and if the readers would still be as interested a week later, after they had seen her interviewed numerous times.”

Is a Makeover Enough to Land Susan Boyle a Celeb Weekly Cover?

There’s been a tremendous amount of speculation around Susan Boyle and her look. While she’s indicated that a makeover is not in the cards, she’s already showing signs of changing her look.

And, that “makeover” is being closely watched by the celebrity weekly editors.

Look for her potentially getting more play in magazines like InTouch and OK! if she gets a big makeover!  “The magazine format is better for visually spotlighting her makeover,” says InTouch’s Richard Spencer.

Katie Caperton of OK! added, “Everyone loves a makeover! She’s a beautiful woman – inside and out – and a ballgown and glass slippers, would complete the fairy-tale.”

Bottom Line:

Only time will tell if Susan Boyle gets her full cover – but I bet it will happen sooner rather than later.
