Bezos says, “…There’s no bad time to innovate….You should be doing it around things that your customers care about.”

Stephen J. Adler’s Business Week does the best it can with its cover image of the Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke - I guess??

I find it VERY BORING and not very dramatic considering the urgency of the issue.

At least this is a timely feature and anyone (basically everyone) who is affected by what is happening in the markets will want to read this issue. 

Business Week Loses Frank Comes and Mary Kuntz

Porfolio’s Jeff Bercovici reports that Business Week is losing two key editors including Frank Comes and Mary Kuntz. Both are leaving to join McKinsey & Co. Editor in chief Stephen Adler broke the news to his staff Friday.

DELIVERING A TIMELY TOPIC - THAT WASN’T SO HARD WAS IT?

I wrote a scathing piece about last week’s Business Week’s cover “Inside the War on Fat.”

I thought it was the worst timing ever, especially with the disastrous economy news and controversial election.

This week it’s all about the Recession.  Depressing but it’s important that you get what’s happening out there!

I’m personally optimistic.  Go USA!

YAHOO TO LAUNCH “SHINE, ” A NEW WOMEN’S SERVICE SITE! 

YIPPE! OH, NO, I MEANT TO SAY…

Brandon Holley,  Shine’s editor-in-chief, and former EIC of defunct magazines Jane and Elle Girl, is leading the charge for Yahoo! in developing a new woman’s site, according to Business Week’s Jon Fine.

That’s the first bad sign.  How do editors keep getting top jobs when everything they worked on before folded?

The magazine will target women between the ages of 25 to 54 and focuses on fashion and beauty, entertainment, health, home, food, astrology, parenting, relationships, and work and money.

“Your usual suspects for a women’s magazine.” says Brandon Holley.  (I’m totally NOT inspired.) 

That’s also bad sign number two.  I hope that Ms. Holley is keeping the secret formula to herself cuz this new site sounds like a total bore.

While women’s service magazines will continue to struggle on the newsstand, it doesn’t sound like they have to worry too much about the new Yahoo! initiative.  

But don’t kid yourself, the women’s service category is F#@K#D unless they figure out how to build long-term relationships with their readers online!

CRITIQUE: Business Week Misses the Big Story

It’s the Election Stupid!

I said this earlier today and I’ll say it again.  

The business magazines and news magazines are failing their readers by not delivering compelling cover stories on the election.  Case in point is this week’s cover of Business Week, which is “Inside the War on Fat.”  

Yeah, we live in a country that is suffering from obesity but is that what anyone is talking about RIGHT NOW???

With everyone talking about a recession, I want to know how each of the candidates will help solve our well-talked about financial woes.  

I’m Having an Anxiety Attack Just Looking at this Cover!

For me, there is nothing more stressful than hooking up a gadget.  Any gadget.  You name it.  My ipod, cell phone or even  my @%^@ computer!   Yes, the cover is about building the perfect laptop, but it makes me feel like I have to put the computer together.   Really bad visual for the cover and it will turn off a ton of newsstand buyers.

How Credit Cards Are Pushing the Country Over the Edge!

It’s not hard to see why readers won’t want to buy this issue at the newsstand.  It’s another depressing cover story about our miserable economy.   This one focuses on our addiction to credit cards.  (BusinessWeek)

Here we  see yet another example of how the weekly magazines will continue to struggle in this 24/7 media world.  “Microsoft & Yahoo:  Will they Click?” is the secondary line on this cover and anyone that follows business news knows that Yahoo! rejected the offer.

On the positive front, this is a very strong visual image to illustrate the main cover topic.

I Can Finally Buy An Apartment…

Anywhere BUT  New York City!

For years, everyone is talking about this housing meltdown!   Yet, there are condos being built on every street in NYC.   And the new rentals continue to be a fortune.   When will the madness stop in NYC?  Probably never. 

But Business Week says there’s a housing meltdown across the U.S. and shares why home prices could drop 25% more on average before the market finally hits bottom!

Unfortunately, we’re just NOT seeing it happen on our little island of Manhattan.  Major bummer!
