Mark Pasetsky's Cover Awards

Before I get started - I’ll say the same thing I said about the Enquirer’s cover. I want to see the real dates on the photos!

Moving forward - this is a sadly, strong cover for Globe.

Paul Newman does look emaciated and supports the mag’s theory that he is dying, which is really sad.

The Bill Clinton picture with the photo inset is priceless - even though I suspect it’s a quite innocent hand-holding moment.

And for the tabloids this is what helps move covers off the newsstand — even with high gas prices.

People are addicted to this type of stuff.

One other note. The Globe claims it has the scoop on Oprah’s “secret” booze battle. For anyone that watches the show, and has seen her talk about tequila shots, it’s not a secret.

Bottom line: Very strong, photo driven cover.

You really can’t compare the Globe to the other weeklies or even the National Enquirer.

This is clearly the magazine tailor made for retirees (and some Gay men - see Golden Girls‘ inset.)

Pasetsky’s Cover Critique

Globe offers its readers a strong cover this week featuring Ted Kennedy.

People are still shocked by his diagnosis and with the big cancer initiative in the news, this cover is very timely.

Pasetsky’s Cover Critique

I bet they would have gone for Ted Kennedy as the main cover if they closed later - but the Senator’s condition was not released until yesterday.

The main story featuring Bill & Hillary is entertaining.   Globe uses the well-known Clinton fortune “$109 million” as its hook.  They forgot to subtract the amount Hillary has used to loan to her campaign.

And there’s a nice, emotional story on Patrick Swayze renewing his wedding vows!

Bottom Line: Overall a strong cover from Globe.

Well here’s some good news.

And I think Patrick Swayze fans will be quite happy to see this cover.

Let’s just hope it’s true.

And Oprah snubs Barack.  No surprise there.  She’s definitely not as popular since she publicly endorsed him.

Bottom Line: Not sure if an uplifting cover on Patrick will equal strong sales for Globe.
