NBC News has announced it will hire the late Tim Russert’s son Luke as a “correspondent at large” to cover the upcoming political conventions,reports Radar.

Luke Russert apparently made such a good impression on viewers in the days after his father’s funeral that NBC is reportedly tapping him to be part of their election coverage team.

“My dad was my best friend,” Luke Russert said, his voice strong and clear. “To explain my bond with my father is utterly impossible to put into words.”

Barack Obama and John McCain sat together and talked quietly at the funeral service of Tim Russert in Washington D.C., according to the New York Times.

Russert’s son, Luke, 22, made the request and requested that other politicians “engage in spirited debate but disavow the low tactics that distract Americans from the most important issues facing our country.” At the end of the service, the two candidates embraced.

“Five months from now,” Luke Russert said a few hours later, “I wanted them to remember that this occasion brought them together.”
