Madonna opened up the MTV VMA’s with a tribute to Michael Jackson. Apparently, the two had a lot in common. Both Madonna and Michael were born in 1958 in August in the midwest.

“Michael Jackson was a hero,” she said. “He seemed otherwordly.”

Madonna asked Michael Jackson out to dinner in 1991. They held hands during a movie, but it was a friendship — not a romance.

She was floored when she found out about his death in London this past June.

“We allowed this magnificent creature slip threw the cracks — there will never be anyone like him again. He was a king. Long live the king.”

We’re told Madonna grinds against Jesus (shocking) and Lourdes does some sort of street-type dance performance thing.

Madonna isn’t known for, er, sexual subtlety which is why the singer’s old love letters and dirty answering machine messages to an ex should fetch an estimated $40, 000 at an upcoming celebrity auction.

Madonna’s things will be part of an online auction ending August 5th. Also included: Muhammad Ali’s training robe from 1976 and Jimi Hendrix’s $1 performance contract.

Madonna will pay homage to old friend Michael Jackson today during her concert at London’s O2 arena. Michael and Madonna were famous friends. He was her date to the 1991 Oscars.
