NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC WINS THREE AWARDS AT NATIONAL MAGAZINE AWARDS

National Geographic three awards included the General Excellence Awards in the 2 million-plus circ category for the second year in a row, reports Mediaweek.

The New Yorker and New York magazines each got one award, despite being heavily nominated (they received nine and 12, respectively).

RUNNER’S WORLD WILEY TO HEAD ASME

Breaking New: 

David Wiley, the incoming American Society of Magazine Editors’ president said that “while his medium has a role in its printed form, editors’ ongoing challenge is to figure out how to use the Web to extend their brands.

However, Wiley says, “There’s still no substitute for the hold-it-in-your-hand appeal,” he tells Mediaweek.

Pasetsky’s Opinion: Until magazines figure out how to make their products more visual, we will continue to see a decline in circulation.  This is true across all categories.

CONDENET ACQUIRES SFO*MEDIA

CondeNet, the online unit of Conde Nast, acquired HotelChatter.com and Jaunted.com, which are published by SFO*Media, according to Mediaweek.

ABC RUSHING TO PUBLISH RAPID REPORT GUIDELINES

Buyers want numbers from publishers faster, while publishers are hesitant to comply because they fear it will hurt them in the negotiating process, reports Mediaweek.

ABC will now publish guidelines for using Rapid Report data the week of April 21st.  

The new guidelines called for publishers to file initial postings no later than three weeks after the on-sale date for weeklies, five weeks after the on-sale date for bi-weeklies, and seven weeks after the on-sale date for monthlies.

Mediaweek reports that ABC will make this request on March 18th.  

David Leckey, EVP, Consumer Marketing, AMI, and ABC vice chairman chimed in and called the recommendations as “best practice guidelines,” saying, “We just want participants to speed up their initial estimates, subject to change.  Hopefully, it’ll be embraced.”

Come on already.  Show us the numbers!  You’ve got them.  What’s the big deal?  Um, they suck!

Trying to Supplement Copies Sold in Your Local Supermarket, Publishers Find Some Success in New Locations

“While magazines continue to lose racks in supermarkets, they are becoming innovative (NOT) and heading to nontraditional retailers and dollars stores,” according to Mediaweek.

 My Suggestion.  Try making a deal with Starbucks.

Yes.  I know that you all have tried this before.  But why not try it again?  It’s the perfect place for potential growth. 

Oh, but will consumers read the magazine and put it back on the rack?  Then create some type of device where the consumer has to buy the magazine from a machine and can’t put it back after they’ve read it!   Come on, it’s 2008!  You can do it!

With all the talk about NYMag.com crashing because of the Lindsay Lohan nude pics, SI.com is having its own traffic surge.

Breaking News: Hearst Launches YouTube Channels for Good HouseKeeping, Seventeen & Marie Claire

Hearst Magazines announced today three YouTube Channels for Good Housekeeping, Seventeen and Marie Claire, and will add 12 more in the near future, according to Mediaweek’s Lucia Moses.  The channels will ask users to provide videos and participate in contests.  Ultimately, the publisher hopes to drive traffic to its magazine’s web sites and share ad revenue with YouTube.

Magazines like TV Guide could possibly see the number of copies they distribute cut according to Mediaweek’s Lucia Moses. Three major magazine wholesalers are continuing their “drive toward efficiency and profitability by hacking away at the number of copies they distribute” while somehow ensuring that single-copy sales won’t suffer.
