Michael Jackson Magazine Covers: A Unique Approach Possible?
The Michael Jackson story represents a moment in time for the celebrity weekly category that will be remembered for years to come.
In every other week of the year, editors pause and think about what the competition is doing and hope that competitors don’t cover the same topic.
Not so this week!
This was the first time in decades that editors were faced with competition not only from the category competitors – but from newsweeklies, music magazines and special stand-alone tribute issues. Everybody knew that one star, Michael Jackson, would be the main cover story of the week.
The result? All of the editors clearly understood how big this story is and delivered Michael Jackson covers across the board – except Star Magazine. More on Star later!

What’s even more fascinating is that each magazine developed a cover that is different in some way – from the visual approach to the way the story was packaged on the cover.

Let’s take a look at each celebrity weekly and the approach they decided to use to stand out from the competition:
The Tribute Approach
People Magazine served up its traditional tribute issue with the King of Pop Performing. The main line ‘The Talent and Tragedy’ reflects what readers think of Michael Jackson’s entire life.
Michael Jackson’s Children
By featuring a photo of Michael Jackson and his children, Us Magazine predicted correctly that there would immediately be a great debate about the future of the children.

The Last Photo
OK! Magazine features the last photo of Michael Jackson alive in his ambulance on the way to the hospital coupled with a tribute to the King of Pop. (full disclosure: author consults for OK!) The main line ‘Tragic Death: Why He Didn’t Have to Die’ is how many people are feeling about MJ’s sudden passing.
Farrah and Michael
Meanwhile, In Touch Weekly is the only weekly to feature both Farrah Fawcett and Michael Jackson on its cover. The line ‘Two Icons Die On The Same Day’ captures what we were all thinking last Thursday.
Murder
Who Killed Michael Jackson? That’s the big question asked by Life & Style this week and that’s not surprising as there are still many questions surrounding MJ’s death.
No Michael Jackson!
Many of you may be wondering why Star Magazine published a Best & Worst Beach Body issue. The answer is simple. With sister titles National Enquirer and Globe publishing MJ issues, it looks like Star felt it didn’t make sense to add another cover to the mix. Plus, the same company — AMI – also released a special King of Pop commemorative issue.
