John McCain’s People Magazine Cover Selling Far Under Palin Covers

With National Enquirer, People MagazineUs Weekly and OK! Magazinecovers, it seems that Sarah Palin is a tabloid superstar.  McCain, on the other hand isn’t fairing so well, at least in newsstand sales.

According to a source, the McCain family issue of People has not sold as well as the Palin cover and is even selling below the magazine’s weekly average, reports MSNBC.

“I can remember seeing a news clip on TV about it when I was young and then our housekeeper turning off the TV … My mom’s been very open about it, how she got to that place, how she suffered with addiction, and got over it and went to rehab. Now, she still won’t take anything stronger than Tylenol or Advil. She doesn’t want to risk anything,” says Meghan McCain in the new issue of People.

People Features McCain Family Photo: Yes, All The McCains!

This was a rare moment and People Magazine captured it.

While there have been several Obama family covers, this is the first full cover featuring the entire McCain family.

The photo was taken in a hotel room during the RNC’s Minneapolis convention.

According to managing editor Larrry Hackett on Larry King last night, he indicated that these types of political covers have continued to do well because of the public’s interest in this election.

And this one…

ELLEN DEGENERES: Quote of the Day

“I had a big weekend,” said Ellen. “I got married to Portia de Rossi! Sorry, John Stamos … this one’s taken.”

HOT POST: People Reveals Historic Ellen DeGeneres Wedding Cover

To buy this issue, click here.

When you see this cover of People Magazine hitting newsstands on Wed, take a second to let it sink in.

It’s Ellen DeGeneres getting married to Portia de Rossi on the cover of People.

Who would have ever thought that we would see this day?

For all the lesbian and gay partners in the United States, this is more than a magazine cover.

It’s another sign that this country is finally getting its act together and treating all people as equal.

In the past, it was historic to see a star come out on the cover of People. The bar is much higher today.

Now it’s about weddings, babies and equality.

On another note, this is an incredible message to send to gay and lesbian kids who finally have a role model.

And who better than Ellen DeGeneres? She broke through when she came out on her sitcom. But, now she brings it to a completely new level.

One last note. This could not have been done without the leadership of Larry Hackett of People.

PEOPLE MAGAZINE FEATURES THE OBAMAS AT HOME

My immediate reaction?

I thought Barack Obama said the Access Hollywood interview was the LAST time he would put his daughters in the media spotlight?

Putting that aside, this is an incredibly strong cover for Larry Hackett’s People magazine.

It’s the first cover featuring the entire Barack Obama family. (Janice Min’s Us Weekly was the first glossy glossy to feature Barack & Michelle Obama on its cover.)

While the Obama family photo is strong, it’s worth noting that Michelle Obama is somewhat in the background. Do you think that was done on purpose?

I do. Her popularity is in question and editors think about these types of things when it comes to selecting the final cover picture.

PASETSKY PREDICTS: 2008 1/2 Half Newsstand Numbers for Celebrity Weekly Category

Who will be number one on the newsstand?

It looks like People Magazine will retain that title on the newsstand.

But, there is a bit of a shake-up happening in the category when it comes to newsstand sales, which are a key metric for a magazine’s vitality.

Here’s my prediction for the first half of 2008: (This prediction does not include subscription sales):

  1. People Magazine
  2. Us Weekly
  3. InTouch
  4. Star
  5. National Enquirer
  6. OK!
  7. Life & Style
  8. Globe
  9. TV Guide

The official numbers will be out in about a month. But, I bet these are pretty on target.

Thoughts?
