JEFF BERCOVICI IN CENTRAL PARK?

Was that Portfolio’s Jeff Bercovici explaining the purpose of teaser campaigns?  You know, the one that says “You Suck Sarah Marshall.” (Portfolio)

PORTFOLIO REPORTS ON GENDER NEWS IN THE OFFICE!

port.jpg

Joanne Lipman’s Portfolio Magazine comes out with a strong visual cover for its in-depth report on women’s progress in the workplace.

The striking red high heal shoe being held down by the men’s black lace-up shoe tells the whole story.

According to Portfolio, “After 10 years of progress, women’s gains at work have come to a baffling halt.”

There are so many interesting details in the cover story on why women are still not receiving equal treatment.  Here’s an excerpt from the interview with Senior chairman and chief headhunter Gerry Roche, of Heidrick & Struggles.

Portfolio Forcing Writers to Sign Contracts?

port.jpg

Late Breaking News for a Friday Afternoon:  Gawker is reporting that Joanne Lipman’s Portfolio is “pushing its staff writers into contracts.  Currently, writers at the magazine are considered full-time and get appropriate benefits. That would change if they became independent contractors who regularly write for the magazine.”

If they force you into signing this and you lose your benefits, definitely start looking for a new job IMMEDIATELY.   If you can’t find something great, than at least freelance on the side.

Economic Stress & Politics Drives Web Traffic

Portfolio’s Jeff Bercovice reports that “millions of people sitting at their computers clicking “refresh” to see the latest on the primaries or the stock market added up to a nice traffic lift for finance and politics sites (in Feb), according to ComScore.”  For Jeff’s complete report, click here.

CRITIQUE: Why Portfolio’s Coverline is a Bust

portfolio.jpg

Boom!  What Boom!

Portfolio is not connecting with their readers in an instant.   And, that’s the problem with the headline.  I’m thinking that they’re talking about a boom in the U.S., which clearly isn’t happening!

Move to the dek and you get that they’re talking about Iraq but I’ve already walked by this issue on the newsstand!

Better luck next issue.

Is Portfolio in Trouble?

portfolio1.jpg

It looks like Portfolio is continuing to struggle in its early days, according to the NY Post’s Keith Kelly.

The magazine is said to be bleeding more than $5 million dollars a month, making it the most costly launch in magazine history.  On the newsstand, the mag’s sell through is said to be about 15 percent.  This mean it’s sometimes selling only 25,000 copies a month.

Portfolio’s Familiar Looking Cover

portfolio1.jpg

The layout of this cover looks familiar according to Portfolio’s Jeff Bercovici, – and that’s not a bad thing!  However, my issue with this Portfolio cover is the main line.   As a reader,  I don’t get it.   What did Fat win?   I’m also curious why Portfolio left off the name of the company that is featured in the inside story???  Also, don’t miss the Britney line on the top right.  It’s becoming quite popular to include a Britney story on the cover even if it’s not a celebrity magazine!
