Robert Gibbs, a top aide to Barack Obama on his campaign and in his Senate office, will be named the White House press secretary, a top Democratic official said.

Gibbs was usually the senior official on Air Obama, the campaign plane, reports Politico.

In addition, Illinois Rep. Rahm Emanuel has officially accepted the job of chief of staff under Barack Obama, reports HuffPo.

Emanuel seemed to have accepted the job yesterday, but did not offically confirm until moments ago.

Barack Obama Leaves Campaign to Be With Gravely Ill Grandmother

Sad news for Barack Obama.

He is canceling nearly all his campaign events Thursday and Friday to fly to Hawaii to visit his suddenly gravely ill 85-year-old grandmother, his communications director Robert Gibbs said.

“Senator Obama’s grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, has always been one of the most important people in his life, along with his mother and his grandfather,” said Gibbs.

Letterman, 61, questioned why NBC is proceeding with its plan to remove Leno, who consistently tops the late-night ratings, reports the new issue of Rolling Stone.

Conan O’Brien will take over “Tonight” in June 2009, with Jimmy Fallon moving into O’Brien’s “Late Night” chair.

“Unless I’m misunderstanding something, I don’t know why, after the job Jay has done for them, why they would relinquish that,” Letterman said, adding, “I have to believe he was not happy about it.”
