John McCain’s People Magazine Cover Selling Far Under Palin Covers

With National Enquirer, People MagazineUs Weekly and OK! Magazinecovers, it seems that Sarah Palin is a tabloid superstar.  McCain, on the other hand isn’t fairing so well, at least in newsstand sales.

According to a source, the McCain family issue of People has not sold as well as the Palin cover and is even selling below the magazine’s weekly average, reports MSNBC.

US Weekly’s Janice Min Defends Controversial Sarah Palin Cover

Janice Min, the editor of Us Weekly, argued that politicians were fair game:

“This is an election where personality is getting sold, oftentimes far ahead of platform, and that personal interest in the candidates has definitely crossed over into the pop-culture arena,” Min said in the New York Times. “I think that after so many years where people decried the interest in celebrity as a distraction from real issues, I’ve definitely noticed the worlds converging.”

UPDATE: US Weekly Losses NOT SO BAD

Earlier today there were reports stating that Us Weekly had lost as many as 10,000 subscribers due to its Sarah Palin cover.

A well-placed source at Us Weekly tells Huffington Post that since Wednesday, there have actually been a little more than 1,000 cancellations. This, however, has been evened out by the 1,000 bonus subscriptions from supporters of the magazine.

Us Weekly Losing Subscribers Over Palin Issue: Should Us Press the Panic Button?

Us Weekly has been receiving a ton of heat over its Sarah Palin cover (above.)

MSNBC is reporting that the magazine has lost thousands of subscribers in just the first 24 hours following the printing of the issue.

“I’m hearing it’s 5,000, maybe more,” says one well-placed source in the industry. Another source claimed that as many as 10,000 readers have already cancelled their subscriptions. A spokesperson for Wenner Media, which publishes Us, says “it is completely false that we are losing 10,000 subscribers.”  As for the 5,000 estimate, the spokesperson only said “that is false, too,” but wouldn’t comment further.

Should Us Weekly be panicking over these types of reports?
